YASHWANT JOSHI sings raga Bilaskhani Todi, the creation of Bilas Khan, one of the sons of the great musician Tansen at Emperor Akbar's court. Legend has it that before Tansen died he decreed that his successor as Khalifa was that son whose music could make his body move. Bilas Khan returned to the court from a life of wandering and at Tansen's funeral created and sang this raga, which had the desired effect. Yashwant Joshi's rendition is both unique and traditional, while preserving the raga's essential pathos.
